abc 7 news at 6:30, on your side. >> as the sun came up this morning, people all around the area realized how much damage was done by yesterday's powerful storm. our crews hit the streets this morning to check out the aftermath of the storms. our team coverage includes our meteorologist, will clear up confusion about a reported tornado. we get started in d.c. tonight. not only were there downed trees and lots of debris, but buildings were damaged. >> this is appleton street and you can see some of the debris on the street. there's a crashed car there and a power pole, but check this

out, the have power crews already getting some of the wiring back up. a big cleanup after a destructive storm. the scream of a wood chipper echoed in northwest on sunday. >> the wins were incredibly fierce. >> down the trees and some world power lines and crashed cars. the aftermath of a storm that slammed the metro area. >> you could look out the window and it was unbelievable. everything was sideways. >> the high winds, about 60 miles an hour, knocked out power to thousands. for this three week old car, it was one of the casualties. >> we got away from the windows and i just saw the polls snapped and go down on the car. >> the storm force winds slammed northeast d.c. also. this building at fourth and eighth straight sustained some of the worst damage.

>> it sounded like thunder. >> this man snapped this photo just moments after wind peeled off part of the roof. >> i think i was from the far side and it just collapsed all in one direction. >> but look at this -- just across the street on this building, always some purely paper. some areas were damaged and others were completely untouched. >> it's amazing to write three or four streets and see nothing and then you come to a tree down or something like that. >> back on appleton street residents are marveling at the trees and power poles knocked down like dominoes. >> as far as we know, no one was hurt. >> a pretty impressive clean up. hours ago, the street was choked with debris and now the power crews are hard at work. there polling those lines down to the ground. there are not live and there's a

lot more work to be done. in falls church, there was quite a bit of sustained damage. >> it is a community of clean up here. more than 24 hours after the powerful storm made its way through, there have been three cutting companies and power crews here all day. but they have had to battle quite a mess from mother nature. >> uprooted trees and limbs across the yard. tennis courts trapped under a pile of debris. it is all part of the mess left behind by mother nature. >> the trees were just bending way over and we thought we were going to lose a tree possibly but we didn't. >> but her neighbor didn't lose a tree. it came crashing on to the power lines that serve her home. like many in this community, for the past 24 hours, she has been in the dark. >> i went out at 7:30 this morning and got ice to pack our freezer and took the food out of the refrigerator and put it into

the cooler and hoped for the best. >> that is what thousands have been doing across north virginia -- northern virginia. after the summer storms many were concerned it could be days before the lights came back on. >> the crews have been working that's not the case -- working to assure that is not the case. in some places, the power is back on that they're dealing with other part -- dealing with other problems. a section of the tree came crashing through his house. >> it wasn't that bad during horatio on this property. i was very surprised. >> the cleanup will be similar for some residents in this complex where a tree also splintered the ceiling. >> as the cleanup continues, we have heard from somebody who said they were surprised by the security of the damage content -- considering the short time this storm lasted. in falls church, if you want the

debris picked up, it must be bundled and the city will come through on wednesday. >> as the cleanup continues, we want to get you the latest power outage numbers. thousands are still without power tonight. here are the latest numbers -- there was a little bit of confusion about whether or not a tornado touched down on sunday. did it or did it not? >> it did not. has been a very quiet afternoon here but i did make contact with the national weather service yesterday. they sent out three separate teams to investigate damage that was consistent with that of a tornado. however, it was not a tornado and no tornadoes were confirmed yesterday. just very strong wind along with

maryland. syracuse right now at 67. look at the milder air building across parts of the midwest. this will slowly move in our direction and by midweek, our temperatures will be back into the lower and middle '80s. compared to yesterday at this time when we have a cold front that moved through, we are 10 degrees warmer. we lost about 25 degrees and the matter of one hour yesterday as a cold front charged off toward the east. you can see it is now well offshore. that influence their day for today, tomorrow and for the week. it looks like our next best chance of showers will, until the end of the upcoming weekend. these guys are beginning to clear to the rest of us -- to the west of us. plenty of sunshine for the next 40 minutes or so. look for mainly clear skies

rgiii said he left his son and virginia by accident and that helped him handle the pressure. he said the record for the best passer in his debut. >> there wasn't a call screen door a thing, it was just another ranking offense and it worked. a first couple plays and then they started playing it and it opened up a lot of our other stuff. >> he did an unbelievable job to play the way he did in his first game in a national football league. the way we played was a big plus for our guys. >> he did really good. the offensive line did a great job and he scrambled when we needed it. >> today's game marks the first time since december 19, 2010, the redskins scored 30 points or more. an injury update -- appeared personifies fine. he will be ready to go for next week's game. >> thank you. the marlins beat the nationals
